Simonetta studied law at the Anáhuac Mayab University in Mexico and in 2002 she obtained an MsC in eCommerce Management & Organisational Behaviour from Birbeck College in London where she lived for seven years. In 2005 she went to live in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and it was there that she re-discovered her great passion for personal development and self-leadership. She began to train in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and later became a Master NLP Coach & Trainer as well as a specialist in Business Coaching, Neurosciences and Neuro Plasticity.
My journey into motherhood began in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, a place far from the comfort of my immediate family. My husband’s frequent travels added an extra layer of complexity to the situation. Frankly, I often found myself feeling completely clueless about raising kids and I frequently questioned my ability to be a good mom. The lack of knowledge, tools and of course experience was overwhelming, and the prospect of parenting appeared as a daunting, insurmountable challenge. What I discovered, however, was that this feeling is not unique to me, many parents, especially those living abroad – without the support of an immediate family – share similar emotions.
When my kids were 5 and 3 years old, I stumbled upon the transformative power of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and coaching, which proved to be the guiding light I needed in my journey to raise independent and responsible children. NLP and coaching became my lifeline in navigating the challenging labyrinth of parenthood, bolstering my confidence as a mom. It equipped me with invaluable skills and perspectives that effectively transformed what once seemed like an overwhelming task into a fulfilling and rewarding adventure.
Coaching kids using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) tools is a highly effective approach to parenting that can lead to better communication, understanding, and the development of crucial life skills in children. NLP offers a range of techniques that can be applied to raising kids, and here are three particularly useful ones that helped me in this journey of motherhood:
NLP emphasizes the importance of effective communication and understanding different communication styles and tailoring your approach to match the child’s preferences. By doing so, parents can ensure that their messages are conveyed clearly and are more likely to be comprehended. This technique helps in reducing miscommunication and misunderstandings between parents and children. For instance, if a child is more visual in their communication style, using visual aids, charts, or drawings can make instructions or explanations more engaging and effective.
NLP introduces the concept of anchoring, which involves associating a specific stimulus with a particular emotional state. This technique can be incredibly useful in parenting. Parents can create positive anchors for their children, linking certain behaviors or activities with feelings of confidence, happinness, or motivation. For instance, a parent can anchor a positive feeling to a child’s study area, making the child associate studying with a positive emotion, thereby enhancing their motivation to learn.
NLP encourages parents to foster responsible kids by offering them choices and allowing them to assume responsibility. By providing children with age-appropriate decision-making opportunities, parents empower them to learn accountability and consequence management. This approach promotes independence, critical thinking, and self – reliance, shaping children into responsible individuals who can make informed choices and take ownership of their actions, ultimately preparing them for a successful and responsible adulthood.
Incorporating these NLP techniques into parenting can lead to several benefits:
Improved Relationships: Effective communication and understanding of different communication styles can foster stronger parent-child relationships, based on trust and empathy.
Emotional Intelligence: Anchoring positive states can help children develop emotional intelligence, enabling them to manage their emotions effectively and build resilience.
Promotion of Independence and Ownership: Allowing children to make choices and take responsibility for their actions fosters independence and self-reliance, key qualities that prepare them for successful and responsible adulthood.
Coaching kids with Neuro-Linguistic Programming tools can be a powerful approach to raising children. These techniques not only enhance communication but also contribute to the emotional and personal development of children. By integrating NLP principles into parenting, parents can equip their children with valuable skills and nurture their growth into well-rounded, successful individuals who can navigate life’s challenges with confidence and grace.
