"I now know that ‘food’ is not just the stuff we put into our mouths but the thoughts we think, the emotions we feel and the purpose by which we live. We are holistic beings and we need to look at health in that way, the sum of all parts"

Silvia Sanchez, Holistic Health Coach

Originally from Galicia, Silvia spent 20 years working on her British accent in London, a city that (according to her) ‘made her and broke her’, and then showed her the way back to herself. She moved to Barcelona in 2016 and currently lives in Cabrils, one of the lovely villages just inland from the Maresme coastline where she spends her time working as a Holistic Health Coach, making things with feathers and building a home with her partner, 2 children, 2 dogs and a cat.

I wanted to study medicine and took all the science subjects up to Uni… until I realised I would have to study for many years and be tied up at home for all that time. So I packed my suitcase and moved to London to learn English, I was eighteen.

London quickly became a giddy love affair; this was a city where you could shine and hide at the same time. A human jungle that held the door to everything I didn’t know existed. I was bewitched, and ended up staying for 20 years.

I worked hard and I played hard and it all paid off… until it didn’t and I had a major health hiccup. Apparently suppressed emotions, specially the painful ones, end up causing havoc in your body. Trauma has a way of expressing itself if we don’t work with it.

Conventional medicine was incredibly disappointing and disempowering, so I started my quest to find a way to heal that was not dependant on big pharma and that put me back on the steering wheel of my health.

Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine” and he could not be more right. I now know that ‘food’ is not just the stuff we put into our mouths but the thoughts we think, the emotions we feel and the purpose by which we live. We are holistic beings and we need to look at health in that way, the sum of all parts.

Some people think that health coaches have to be the healthiest people on earth, but I’d argue that we often are our biggest saboteurs, and we push and test and fall… how else are we going to have the chance to play alchemists and heal?

I have gotten many friends bored with my alternative medicine approach to things. I also have made some laugh with my shamanic journey adventures. I take it all on my stride, I do realise it can sound far fetched!

I used to find atoms very poetic, now we know we’re mostly energy I have moved my attention to bacteria and the microbiome. We have more bacterial DNA than we have human. We’re really bacteria having a human experience.

I would lie if I said that I’m not constantly amazed by how little we know of our own power. We are so gifted in so many ways, we just need to remember how to use our energy, our mind, our soul and our connection to source. Why have we become so afraid or our own greatness?

Living in Cabrils, in nature, away from the city lights, has been a welcome awakening. I have found a community of inspiring and joyful women with whom I get to spend time with and with whom to share meaningful projects like growing our food in a shared allotment.

If anyone wants to get started in their health journey, they don’t have to go far. Most of the answers are already within us, we just need to know the tools to access them. A journey into the self, I like to call it, a home coming. And a life lived with purpose.
