Barbara Bontempo – Student Coach

Maresme Area

Barbara Bontempo is a Student Coach dedicated to helping international learners of all ages create meaningful, structured learning experiences. With over 20 years of experience in educational psychology, she guides students, parents, and professionals in transforming their learning challenges into sustainable growth.

Originally from Brazil, Barbara has lived and worked in the UK, Chile, China, and Spain, immersing herself in diverse educational systems and multilingual environments. This international journey has given her a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with learning across cultures.

Barbara began her career in language teaching and traditional educational counselling, but she soon realised that real, lasting learning goes beyond instruction. She transitioned into coaching, focusing on building systems that lead to meaningful learning, autonomy, and personal growth. Her coaching method is rooted in the humanistic psychology of Carl Rogers and Thomas Gordon, incorporating emergent references such as James Clear and Cal Newport to help students develop effective learning habits and long-term strategies for flourishing.

She specialises in:

  • Coaching students in developing study strategies that foster focus and long-term growth.
  • Supporting neurodivergent learners (ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) with tailored, effective learning techniques.
  • Helping parents raise multilingual children with confidence and clarity.

She is the co-author of Slurping Soup, a beloved book on growing up multiculturally. An educational counsellor with an MA in Educational Psychology from the University of London, she is also a Certified Instructor of Gordon Training’s Parent Effectiveness Training and Be Your Best programmes. She offers coaching in six languages, including English and Catalan.

Learning should feel like growth, not struggle. When we design study systems that align with our natural drive for autonomy and meaning, we unlock confidence, flow, and a lifelong love of learning.

What people are saying about Barbara Bontempo
Barbara gave my son the tools to get organized, tackle a massive backlog of work, and, most importantly, she raised his self-esteem. Together, they achieved what I thought wasn’t possible. Barbara’s influence extended beyond academics as well, positively impacting his overall personal development. I am incredibly grateful for her dedication and support.

I can't recommend Barbara highly enough. Working with her has been a game-changer for me. She helped me get organized, overhaul my schedule, and finally get on top of my projects and life admin. Her guidance is practical, actionable, and tailored to my needs—she truly understands how to create systems that work for your life, not against it.

I had been stuck on a nearly finished task for five years, unable to complete it. Barbara’s coaching and coworking sessions helped me finally structure my work, manage my time, and close that chapter. Thanks to her guidance, I now have the tools to move forward with clarity and confidence.
Cris Barrufet, PhD student
I really appreciate you helping me get through this year. I don't think I would've been able to do it without you. You made me realize that I had been taking the hard route, and life is way easier with the right tools. I would definitely recommend you as an educational counsellor—you make people feel proud of their progress.
Rubén, student
My son has just started working with Barbara, and she is amazing with teens. Even though they’ve only met a few times, he is already proud of how much he got done in their sessions and went to school with more confidence this week. Highly recommend.
