A family-run English school in a cosy setting

Tandem English School

Argentona

Tandem is an English language school in Argentona founded by Mexican / American Jennifer Richmond. Shortly after arriving in Spain with her family, Jennifer converted the basement of her home into a classroom, allowing her to follow her passion – education for children. As demand grew for her English classes she converted the large classroom into several smaller classrooms and children were coming and going all afternoon and early evening. She soon needed a larger venue to accommodate the many families that were requesting enrolment and moved to a new location in the village that would support the expanded demand.

To maximise the children’s learning capabilities, Jennifer introduced lunchtime classes at Tandem, where children were picked up from their schools, fed lunch, and provided an hour of English classes between their morning and afternoon school hours.

In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jennifer realised the potential negative impact a lockdown would have on her students. She set up an online lesson system that would enable all students to continue with the rhythm of learning as if in school. The goal was to keep the students connected and far from the feelings of isolation that many youngsters experienced during those hard days.

With the return of in-person classes, Jennifer decided the best option for Tandem and her students was to return to small and familiar group lessons in her home.  With everything that was learned through Covid and the support of Jennifer’s family and students, she founded Teachers for Peace, a not-for-profit international union of teachers offering children in Ukraine an alternate focus from the ravages of war. This was an amazing opportunity for everyone in the Tandem family to share a smile, practice English and connect with students in Ukraine and teachers from all over the world.

The Tandem School journey has taken me and my family to unimagined places. I am so grateful for everything Tandem has taught me and the community that has grown with it.

What people are saying about Tandem English School
I first met Jennifer when I was twelve, and I started to take English lessons. For many years, I just interacted with her in the hall, but still, she managed to convince me to participate in many activities she was always planning. This summer, she became my teacher, and all the passion I had always seen in her, was finally proven to me. She is the most supportive and encouraging, and for this reason, it is always a pleasure to be in her class.

The teaching methodology Jennifer uses goes with the needs of the students. When you learn a new language using different techniques you do not lose focus and after a short time you start to see the results of time invested.

We were very lucky to find Jenny during the lockdown. My son received weekly online classes and this way he was able to continue advancing with his English in a personalised way and at his own pace, with a native speaker, which is what we were looking for. She is very affectionate and respectful, my son adores her. It is very rewarding to learn English with her, totally recommended.

We decided a long time ago that our daughter should learn English… at that time she was very young, just 4 years old, and after looking at several options we thought that the Tándem academy could be a good fit. Today our daughter is 11 years old and continues to attend her weekly classes just as happy and content as the first day. After so much time we can explain with much more clarity what the Tándem academy has meant for our daughter.

The academy immerses the pupil in the language from the beginning. The children play, experiment, do crafts and many more ideas that they usually have, the classes are small and the teachers adapt to each child and they become immersed in the language. One day you realise that they begin to use the language in their daily lives and that they already read, write and understand it much more fluently.

For our daughter it has been a success to add Tándem to her teaching, because despite having been there for so long she continues to go happily and wanting to improve with her classmates and teachers, who have always been very fun and kind.
