About Maresme

The Maresme region covers a narrow strip of land in the north east of Catalonia, between Barcelona and the Costa Brava. The region is made up of 30 towns, 16 of which are on the coast, with a total population of around 440,000 inhabitants and 52km of coastline between Montgat (to the south) and Malgrat de Mar (to the north). The capital of Maresme is Mataró, with around 125,000 inhabitants.

The region is known for its unique traditions, history and fine local cuisine and has a distinctive landscape where the mountains and vineyards meet the beaches of the Mediterranean. The area offers the best of both mountain pursuits and water sports. Maresme boasts golden sandy beaches interspersed with small coves to form an idyllic landscape with warm, dry summers and mild, bright winters. Just 15 minutes north of Barcelona, discover the history of the region’s towns and people and savour its local cuisine and fine wines.

The Maresme area is renowned for the excellent quality of life it offers, with an enviable sunny microclimate, clean air, a low crime rate and an abundance of outdoor pursuits on offer such as horse riding, golf, sailing and hiking. The area features a long stretch of sandy coastline backed by rolling green hills, vineyards and natural parks, making it a highly privileged setting in which to live permanently or to own a holiday property.

It is an ideal location for those that make the daily commute to the city for work but wish to come home to an area that provides a relaxed, healthy lifestyle, as both Barcelona City and the airport can be reached very easily by road and rail from the Maresme towns.

The region boasts a variety of colourful year-round events including music and culinary festivals, summer beach parties, and national cultural celebrations as well as offering a number of excellent international schools, children’s parks and activities, making the Maresme an ideal place to establish your family home.

Maresme Connect’s sponsors Lucas Fox have been based in the region since 2013 and have grown to become one of the area’s most respected real estate agencies. Their high quality properties range from chic seafront apartments to spacious family homes with pools, covering the areas from Tiana to Sant Andreu de Llavaneres.

“The Maresme Coast, immediately to the north of Barcelona city, is less well known to overseas buyers but offers excellent value for money and an attractive and more cost effective alternative for Brits looking for well-priced holiday homes in the region. It also has distinct advantages – closer proximity to Barcelona city centre (the first villages of the Maresme are just 15km from the city centre), easier access to the Costa Brava and to the ski slopes of the Pyrenees as well as a more “local” feel with year-round life and fewer tourists in high season. The Serralada Litoral Natural Park (a vast area of woodland that provides the backdrop to the attractive Maresme villages), the vineyards (Alta Alella wines are served in The Fat Duck), award-winning beaches, the numerous sports clubs, and fantastic local restaurants (including Michelin-starred) all add to the region’s growing appeal.

In the past decade the international community in Maresme has increased substantially as has the number of foreign buyers investing in second homes in the area. There is a choice of two international airports (Barcelona and Girona) both within 40 minutes of the area, making it easily accessible for a Brit looking to make regular weekend and holiday visits. Local schools are highly regarded and there are two excellent international schools in the area. Given its easy access to downtown Barcelona by both train and car (20 minutes without traffic), prices are surprisingly attractive with 4-bedroom sea view homes with a pool starting from €600,000.”
